Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Basics
Core to the IT technology in every business, are the Desktop and/or Laptop computer. Offering enormous flexibility, functionality and mobility, these personal computers have a relatively high operational cost in IT support, helpdesk, general maintenance and software licensing. In a changing economic climate, businesses are looking at ways in which they can reduce these costs and operational support burdens.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a simple concept that brings the notion of virtualisation to the desktop environment. It provides control and manageability to the desktop, whilst maintaining a familiar end-user experience. These desktop images are deployed from a centralized server that provides a reduction in operational costs, improvements in security and data integrity, whilst maintaining an experience that end-users are familiar with.
VDI essentially provides all users with a Virtual PC that looks, behaves and operates in exactly the same way as their current PC, whether users are working in the office or traveling. All user profiles are stored centrally and data backed-up regularly.
Additionally, deploying a VDI environment enables the IT team to consolidate and virtualise a large number of back-end servers supporting these “old world” desktop environments, resulting in reductions in administrative overheads and costs.
